Ew, No, David!

This week, Schitt’s Creek creators, father and son duo, Eugene and Dan Levy, announced the show will end after Season 6 in 2020. And no, just, no. This Canadian confection of show follows the story of how the Rose family lost their entire fortune, save for the one asset the government let them keep, the small, nowhere town of Schitt’s Creek.

I don’t usually like movies or shows where the comedy relies on discomfort or misery of its protagonists, and stalled mid episode one, but my friend who recommended pleaded that I continue. He knew I’d get wrapped up in the siblings, David and Alexis, bumbling and navigating through life stripped of access to private jets and platinum cards. And he was right, that Renaud knows me too well.

Somehow over five season the horrifyingly self-involved siblings have gone on an emotional journey that I can’t helped but get wrapped up in. While most are captivated by Catherine O’Hara’s Moira Rose, it’s Annie Murphy flips her wrists as Alexis, her contorted faces as she tries to convey emotion, and her ability to inspire YouTube compilations simply of how she says her brother’s name, David. How did this character and all her cat-like gesticulations and articulations come to be? Was she like that in the audition? So many questions! And everything Dan Levy does is just magic. Plus, Dan with his Dad, I can’t refuse, I love this story.

There’s so much heart in this show, more than there ever were platinum cards. You’ve got about six months to catch up on all five seasons and gather your most outrageous black feathered ensembles, most fabulous wigs, and studded platforms. I think you’re up for it.
